SCE Events, July, August & September 2009.

July   August   September

Friday 3 rd July “Hay & Honey” at Abington Lodge [ 10.00-4.00 and 5.30 – 8.00]

SCE's Why-on-Hay Festival! You'll need a hat against the sun and we'll get you stuck in to the joys of (and needs for) hay-making. The joys include iced apple-juice from SCE's 2008 orchards. The joy continues with ‘honey for tea'. But you have to help us ‘spin' it too. Another skill learnt! Ask all you like about our BEEKEEPING. If You'd like to help us with them too?

Wednesday 8th July Leaf Cycles Food-box share-out Abington Lodge 12.00 – 2pm.

SCE's pals at Leaf-Cycles provide organic veggie boxes – and deliver them by bicycle-trailer too. And here's where the boxes start coming to Abington Lodge. You live close? You could get your box from here – or share a box with other folk. Or just help us. Ta.

Tuesday 21 st July Save the Bumblebees Twice at Wilsons ' Orchard and/or Abington Meadows 2.00 – 4.00 and 5.30 – 7.30

Bumblebees are friendly great buzzy things and very useful pollinators too. It's a shame that some of them are diminishing or going extinct. Can we help them? Yes. How? Come and find out and enjoy a gentle walk as well.

Friday 24 th July Hay-making Wild Picnic at Abington Lodge 10.00am – 4.00pm and then 6.30 – 8.30pm

The second Why-on-Hay Festival (see 3 rd July) This time followed by a sit in the meadow to appreciate the results and enjoy good food and company. Some of the food and drink we'll gather there and then from the wild, some will come from our gardens and our juicer and some you'll bring along to share – Yes? – and perhaps a favourite poem too?

Saturday 15 th August Umbrella Fair at The Racecourse [ time TBA ]

Once more we'll be at this well known and free-to-enter community event that brings people together through music, performing arts, food and the environment. So please do visit our stall to say hello, ask your asks and generally join us.

Wednesday 26 th August New Field Open Drop-in at Glebeland Fields 10.00 -4.00

This is our newest venture into organic growing. We have taken over an area of land for community growing..so would you like to actively participate in growing for yourselves and others. If so come along and see if you want to be involved.

Friday 4 th September Bats and Chips in Wilsons ' Orchard 7.30 onwards

If you go down in the woods tonight, you may get surprised at what's there. We'll look for creatures that tend to shun the day - and this should include bats. And, even if not, chips round the Rocket Stove should be good.

Friday 18 th -19 th Sept National Moth Night in Wilsons' Orchard 8.00 till late

Now that there's a Biodiversity Action Plan for traditional orchards, the National Moth Recording Scheme has asked that National Moth Night monitors orchards in particular. Just how we'll findout from the visiting expert .

Saturday Sept 19 th RHS Midland Fruit Group Day (RMFG) at Abington Lodge [11.00–2.00] and Wilsons' Orchard [2.30 – 4.30]

SCE hosts this meeting for RMFG, which includes their a.g.m. + interesting apple-talks, a picnic to follow, then a conducted tour of Wilsons' Orchard.
